On January 11, 2023, the International Court of Justice began hearing South Africa’s request to declare Israel in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention. This is an important non-violent effort to curtail the destruction of Gaza, which has seen around 30,000 killed, 2 million displaced and half a million pushed towards a state of famine.
On, January 10, 2023, Canadian Foreign Affairs Institute with Just Peace Advocates hosted a press conference calling on Trudeau to support South Africa’s case to the ICJ with the South African High Commissioner, the Palestinian Authority’s representative in Ottawa, Richard Falk, Avi Lewis and Wesam Ahmad. Covered by The National and other CBC platforms, the Globe and Mail, La Presse, People’s Voice, Canadian Press, Globe and Mail, Le Devoir, Radio Canada and others, CPAC live-streamed the full event.
At the presser we released a public letter calling on Trudeau to support South Africa’s case signed by CUPE Ontario, the Law Union of Ontario, the Canadian International Human Rights Lawyer Association, the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association, BC Civil Liberties Association and 150+ organizations as well as 1000+ individuals, including Gabor Mate, Rawi Hage, Alex Neve, Roger Waters, Libby Davies, Richard Falk, Michael Lynk and Avi Lewis

The press conference
These interventions follow on the heels of a highly successful CFPI/JPA email campaign calling on the NDP to support South Africa’s ICJ case against Israel’s genocide. 9000 have emailed the party prompting NDP foreign critic Heather McPherson to tweet about South Africa’s genocide case and to send a letter to foreign minister Joly calling on Canada to support it. A version of the email campaign focused on the Greens also helped push that Party to publish a statement calling on Trudeau to endorse South Africa’s case. You can continue to ask the Bloc Québécois to support the submission to the ICJ.
The ICJ is expected to render a preliminary ruling before the end of the month and CFPI will work to ensure that a positive court ruling will be used to pressure the Trudeau government to stop enabling Israel’s genocide.
