Stop $1.5 billion to criminal state: CRA must investigate United Israel Appeal of Canada

On May 24, 2024, the international Court of Justice demanded Israel “immediately halt” its onslaught on Rafah and the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court announced that he’d seek warrants to arrest Israel’s PM and defence minister. Still, all Canadian are subsidizing huge sums in charitable donations to this outlaw genocidal state.

A detailed formal complaint was recently submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency to investigate whether United Israel Appeal of Canada (UIA) has violated the rules for registered charities. Since 1991 UIA has raised over $1.5 billion. The complaint details the organization’s opaque finances and questions whether UIA is violating CRA rules by acting as a conduit to send funds to unidentified entities overseas. The complaint also details UIA funding for groups assisting the Israeli military and illegal settlements, which is contrary to CRA regulations.

Over $1 billion dollars that been sent over the last 25 years by the United Israel Appeal (UIA) overseas,, primarily if not exclusively to Israel, with no indication of any recipients of these funds. According to the ATIP, $1,15 Billion was sent to the UIA from 1997 to 2022, with only $6.6 million showing identified entities. Over $5 million of the identified funds were to one travel company.

According to the ATIP, over $1.5 Billion was donated to the UIA from 1991 to 2022, with 87 percent of the donations to the UIA from other charities, with about 13% from individuals.

Two donor charities made up close to 70 percent of the donations to the UIA. Specifically, 43 percent of the funds came from the UNITED JEWISH APPEAL OF GREATER TORONTO, and almost 25 percent from the Montreal based FEDERATION CJA. Among other donors were a number of private foundations that gave up to $100 million.

Over 99 percent of the funds distributed by the UIA is to Israel, with T1236 reports from 2003-2022 indicating $11.1 million of donations within Canada over this period. Of this, our analysis indicates that about 15 percent of these donations to Canadian qualified charities were to charities that are also providing money to Israel. Among these donations by the UIA are donations to charities such as Mizrachi Organization of Canada and the Cultural Zionist Association of Canada (CZCA) which information has been provided previously to the CRA to investigate.
