Dallaire calls Gaza Genocide
At the Salon du Livre de Montreal on Friday United Nations commander in Rwanda in 1994, Romeo Dallaire, said Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. On the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People the former Canadian Senator responded to a question about whether he agreed Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. Widely quoted as an authority on genocide, Dallaire responded emphatically, “yes it is a genocide in Gaza”.
“It would be interesting to hear what Justin Trudeau, who has lauded the ‘greatGeneral Romeo Dallaire’ for his ‘wisdom’, thinks of the former Liberal Senator’s assessment that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza”, asked Karen Rodman of Just Peace Advocates.
“Despite a huge body of legal and expert opinion, Trudeau government officials refuse to admit Israel is committing genocide in Gaza”, added Rodman. “In fact, the Trudeau government continues to assist the Israeli military through arms exports, allowing Canadians to fight with it and by failing to enforce rules against registered charities aiding foreign armies.”
On Saturday Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Israel was “ethically cleansing Gaza” and “the land is being cleared of all the Arabs”.
Video of Dallaire calling Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide went viral on social media over the weekend. In 48 hours more than a quarter million people viewed the retired General’s statement.
In response to the video of Dallaire calling Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide the UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese wrote: “I met General @romeodallaire as we were both waiting to enter the Canadian Senate, last month. Holding my hands tight, the General said: ‘I know what it takes to see a genocide coming.’ It feels like a tsunami. A never-ending tsunami.”
