Virtual Press Conference: “Course correction on Canada-China Relations”

The Hamilton Coalition to Stop The War (HCSW) is pleased to announce that it has organized a virtual press conference for next Monday, January 31st, the day on which Parliament reconvenes. The topic of the event is to call for a “Course Correction on Canada-China Relations.”

Ken Stone, Treasurer of the HCSW noted, “Starting with the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, Justin Trudeau has sabotaged five decades of prosperity and good relations with the People’s Republic of China. Now, he has further undermined relations with his “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing Olympics and his long pause on Huawei’s participation in Canada’s 5G network. The Conservative Party’s Motion 56, which slandered China about a now-debunked genocide of Uyghur Muslims, only made things worse. It’s time for a course correction on Canada-China relations.”

The Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War initiated an open letter to the prime minister earlier this week, supported by a number of Canadian organizations and individuals, urging him to drop his “diplomatic” boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022.

In addition, the HCSW launched an Action Network petition this week calling on the prime minister and cabinet to allow Huawei to continue to participate in Canada’s 5G rollout.

Finally, a parliamentary petition, originated by the HCSW, was sponsored by Hamilton Centre MP Matthew Green and became open for signatures from Canadians this week as well. The petition calls upon the government “to strongly condemn AUKUS as a breach of the UN’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a dangerous escalation of military tensions with the People’s Republic of China and in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Presenters at the press conference on Monday, January 31st are the following:

Yves Engler, fellow, Canadian Foreign Policy Institute;
Radhika Desai, Geopolitical Economy Research Group, Winnipeg;
William Ging Wee Dere, author of “Being Chinese in Canada,” and two-decade activist with the Head-Tax Redress Movement;
Ken Stone, Treasurer, Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War & Organizer, the Cross-Canada Campaign to Free Meng Wanzhou

The press conference, whose official media sponsor is The Canada Files, will begin at 12 noon EST.
