ILLEGAL RECRUITMENT OF CANADIANS FOR WAR IN UKRAINE
It’s reprehensible that the Trudeau government is failing to enforce its own laws on the recruitment of Canadians to fight in foreign wars. Here is the law.
S. 11(1) Foreign Enlistment Act:
Recruiting
· 11 (1) Any person who, within Canada, recruits or otherwise induces any person or body of persons to enlist or to accept any commission or engagement in the armed forces of any foreign state or other armed forces operating in that state is guilty of an offence.
In Hamilton, a portal has been set up to “Fight For Ukraine.” Its creator, businessman Chris Ecklund stated in an interview with the Hamilton Spectator, “This is not a recruiting tool.” However, the website contains a direct link to the International Legion of the Defence of Ukraine, a body set up by Ukrainian President Zelensky to recruit foreigners for combat in Ukraine. By his own admission in the article, Ecklund admits to aiding and counselling those who intend to fight for Ukraine and to help the wounded return to Canada.
In addition, Ecklund’s portal lists the Ukrainian Embassy and two consulates in Canada, in Toronto and Edmonton, for Canadians to contact who wish to join the Ukrainian International (Foreign) Legion. According to the Foreign Enlistment Act, embassies are limited as well to recruiting their own nationals for foreign wars.*
The conflict in Ukraine is a very serious crisis, that has the potential of spreading into a wider European and even world war. It’s important, therefore, that Canada play a useful role in de-escalating the conflict, rather than fuelling the fighting, as it is now, with funding, lethal arms, and mercenaries.
The Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War calls for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine through de-escalation, dialogue, and international diplomacy.
We note that, in the wake of the war hysteria over Ukraine that is gripping this country, respect for the rule of law is being over-ridden by government officials and is escalating the conflict. Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to enforce its own laws preventing the recruitment and enlisting of Canadians in the International Legion of the Defence of Ukraine.

* (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to the action of foreign consular or diplomatic officers or agents in enlisting persons who are nationals of the countries they represent and not Canadian nationals, in conformity with the regulations of the Governor in Council.

RECRUTEMENT ILLÉGAL DE CANADIENS POUR LA GUERRE EN UKRAINE
Il est répréhensible que le gouvernement Trudeau ne fasse pas respecter ses propres lois sur le recrutement de Canadiens pour combattre dans des guerres étrangères. Voici ce que dit la loi :
S. 11(1) Loi sur l’enrôlement à l’étranger :
Recrutement
11 (1) Quiconque, dans les limites du Canada, recrute ou incite autrement une personne ou un groupe de personnes à s’enrôler ou à accepter un brevet ou engagement dans les forces armées d’un État étranger, ou dans d’autres forces armées qui opèrent dans cet État, est coupable d’une infraction.
À Hamilton, un portail a été créé pour “Fight For Ukraine”. Son créateur, l’homme d’affaires Chris Ecklund, a déclaré dans une interview accordée au Hamilton Spectator : “Il ne s’agit pas d’un outil de recrutement.(tr)” Cependant, le site Web contient un lien direct vers la International Legion of the Defence of Ukraine, un organisme créé par le président ukrainien Zelensky pour recruter des étrangers pour le combat en Ukraine. De son propre aveu dans l’article, Ecklund admet aider et conseiller ceux qui ont l’intention de se battre pour l’Ukraine et aider les blessés à rentrer au Canada.
En outre, le portail d’Ecklund donne la liste de l’ambassade d’Ukraine et de deux consulats au Canada, à Toronto et à Edmonton, que les Canadiens peuvent contacter s’ils souhaitent rejoindre la Légion internationale (étrangère) ukrainienne. Selon la Loi sur l’enrôlement à l’étranger, les ambassades sont également limitées au recrutement de leurs propres ressortissants pour les guerres étrangères.*
Le conflit en Ukraine est une crise très grave, qui risque de se transformer en une guerre européenne, voire mondiale. Il est donc important que le Canada joue un rôle utile dans la désescalade du conflit, plutôt que d’alimenter les combats, comme c’est le cas actuellement, avec des fonds, des armes mortelles et des mercenaires.
La Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War appelle à une résolution pacifique du conflit en Ukraine par la désescalade, le dialogue et la diplomatie internationale.
Nous constatons que, dans le sillage de l’hystérie guerrière qui s’empare de l’Ukraine, le respect de l’État de droit est outrepassé par les représentants du gouvernement et entraîne une escalade du conflit. Par conséquent, nous demandons au gouvernement du Canada d’appliquer ses propres lois pour empêcher le recrutement et l’enrôlement de Canadiens dans la International Legion of the Defence of Ukraine.
