NDP votes to sanction Israel

At the party’s ongoing convention delegates voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Palestine Resolution. It calls for “Ending all trade and economic cooperation with illegal settlements in Israel-Palestine” and “Suspending the bilateral trade of all arms and related materials with the State of Israel until Palestinian rights are upheld.”

“Congratulations to the NDP for voting to sanction Israel for its violation of Palestinian rights and international law,” said Bianca Mugyenyi, director of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.

Today’s vote comes after an unprecedented pressure campaign from anti-Palestinian groups targeting the party in the lead up to the convention.

“The Trudeau government has voted against more than 50 UN resolutions upholding Palestinian rights, opposed the International Criminal Court’s effort to investigate Israeli crimes and allowed recruitment for the Israeli military in Canada”, noted Karen Rodman of Just Peace Advocates. “The NDP has an opportunity to be the party in parliament that stands with the long-beleaguered Palestinians.”
