Toronto, May 23, 2020
On Friday, May 22, 2020, a young adult marathoner from Toronto ran a one-person marathon to support the families facing eviction in East Jerusalem.
“When approached about whether there was a cause to support through this marathon it seemed appropriate that the cause be East Jerusalem, as we thinking of Al Quds on the last Friday of Ramadan” said Karen Rodman of Just Peace Advocates. “This is a small effort for the people who are at front of resistance in Al Quds on Al Quds Day.”
$700 was raised through pledges before and during the marathon. Donations continue to be accepted with hope to raise at least $1000.
It is a critical time for Jerusalem. Amid Covid-19, the actions of settlers and military to evict residents of East Jerusalem put families at extreme risk. For example, in Sheikh Jarrah 60 families are at risk, and are facing mounting costs for legal resistance.
“It is critical to provide immediate support to counter through legal resistance, the illegal eviction of families, and protect the children who are at risk of being made homeless in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic” said Rodman
@RussellTheRunner has ran six marathons since May 2019 having started to run in summer of 2018. In April 2020 he ran a backyard marathon that required 2006 revolutions in his backyard to raise money for Sick Kids in Toronto. T
