Just Peace Advocates condemns the brutal Israeli attack on Palestinian worshippers at the al-Aqsa mosque.
The attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound since April 5 2023 are to facilitate settler raids into the Mosque coinciding with Passover.
We concur with Al-Haq in saying:
Israel’s attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque constitutes a blatant violation of international human rights law, including the absolute prohibition of “inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” and the right to manifest and practice religion. Violently attacking Al-Aqsa Mosque is a further measure entrenching the ongoing annexation of the city of Jerusalem, breaching international law principles prohibiting the acquisition of territory through the use of force. The assault may also amount to persecution, a crime against humanity, clearly manifested in the widespread and systemic nature of the deprivation of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including their freedom of religion, by reason of their collectivity and identity.
Under Article 1 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, all high signatories, of which Canada is one, are required to take actions to ensure that violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention do not occur under any circumstance. Thus, we hold the Canadian government its unconditional support for Israeli war crimes and its denial of the racist and apartheid nature of the Israeli regime. We call on the Canadian government to take concrete actions such as ending arms trade with Israel, banning all Israeli goods from illegal settlements, stopping illegal Israeli military recruiting, ending the support for illegal settlements and the military through Canadian tax payer dollars. Without concrete actions, Canada continues to risk exacerbating the root causes driving daily and ongoing Israeli human rights violations and international crimes.
We join to support the Palestinian people in their struggle for liberation, self-determination, freedom and return.
