Canadian civil society representative going to Vienna for International Summit for Peace in Ukraine

(Toronto) – The International Summit for Peace in Ukraine will be taking place in Vienna, Austria this coming weekend on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11. Canadian peace activist, Tamara Lorincz will be representing the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) and the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom Canada (WILPF) at the summit. Tamara is a PhD candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs and recently travelled to Russia, Finland, Latvia, Romania and met with Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

The Vienna summit is organized by a coalition of prominent organizations including the International Peace Bureau, Transform Europe, Europe for Peace, International Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Campaign for Peace Disarmament and Common Security (CPDCS) and the Institute for Intercultural Research and Cooperation (IIRC) among several others. The conference will also be live-streamed at www.peacevienna.org

Over 800 people from around the world will be attending. Some of the high-profile speakers include: Vice President of Bolivia David Choquehuanca; former German diplomat to the United Nations Michael von der Schulenburg; former U.S. Colonel and diplomat Ann Wright; Advisor to the President of Mexico Father Alejandro Solalinde, Member of the European Parliament from Ireland Clare Daly; U.S. economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs as well as civil society leaders from Ukraine and Russia.

The aim of the summit is to publish an urgent global appeal, the Vienna Declaration for Peace for a ceasefire and negotiations to end the escalating war in Ukraine, and to build a broad international network of civil society organizations and politicians from around the world to advance peace, diplomacy and common security in Europe. On behalf of VOW and WILPF, Tamara, will also be advocating for Canada and other NATO countries to stop sending weapons and to support a truth and reconciliation process to end the war modelled after the mediation processes in South Africa and Colombia and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
