Ottawa and Niagara Police to Serve and Protect Israeli Genocide
Statement from Coalition of Canadian Organizations in Solidarity with Palestine.
We, the undersigned, stand in firm solidarity with the Palestinian people facing genocide and denounce the recent acts of bullying, harassment, and intimidation by the Ottawa and Niagara Police Services against Ms. Joanna Berry, a refugee lawyer targeted for her advocacy for Palestine. The recent appalling and outrageous interaction, with the police, captured on video, is symptomatic of a broader, systemic anti-Palestinian racism present in policing across Canada.
Peaceful demonstrators from all backgrounds, united in their stand against human rights abuses, war crimes, violations of international law and genocide, are increasingly subjected to police violence, harassment, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation. Joanna Berry, a white Canadian woman and a lawyer, was able to resist police misconduct, because of her understanding of the law and her rights. Yet, her case is a chilling reminder that the police are now attempting to silence Canadians who speak out, serving the interests of Israel, a foreign state supported by powerful lobby groups in Canada.
Today, it’s Joanna. Tomorrow, it could be any of us.
We call on all fellow Canadians to reject this police abuse of power and intimidation. We demand that all legislators at all levels—federal, provincial, and municipal—launch immediate investigations into the misuse of police power in this country. The Ottawa and Niagara Police Chiefs and Mayors, and Police Service Boards must conduct a thorough investigation into this egregious abuse of authority and hold those responsible accountable.
Together, we must ensure that Canada remains a place where freedom of expression is protected, and all individuals, regardless of their stance or background, are treated with dignity and respect.

Nous, les soussignés, affirmons notre solidarité indéfectible avec la cause palestinienne et dénonçons les récents actes d’intimidation, de harcèlement et de persécution de la part des Services de police d’Ottawa et de la région de Niagara à l’encontre de Joanna Berry, une avocate pour les réfugiés, ciblée pour son soutien à la Palestine. Cette interaction révoltante, capturée en vidéo, est symptomatique du racisme anti-palestinien systémique qui sévit dans les services de police à travers le Canada.
Les manifestants pacifiques de tous horizons, unis dans leur opposition aux violations des droits humains, aux crimes de guerre, au non-respect du droit international et au génocide, sont de plus en plus victimes de violences policières, de harcèlement, d’arrestations arbitraires et d’intimidation. Joanna Berry, une femme blanche canadienne et avocate, a pu résister à la mauvaise conduite policière en raison de sa connaissance des lois et de ses droits. Cependant, son cas est un rappel inquiétant que la police tente désormais de museler les voix des Canadiens qui s’expriment, en servant les intérêts d’Israël, un état étranger appuyé par de puissants groupes de lobby au Canada.
Aujourd’hui, c’est Joanna. Demain, cela pourrait être n’importe lequel d’entre nous.
Nous appelons tous les Canadiens à rejeter ce type d’abus policier et de postures illégales. Nous demandons à tous les législateurs à tous les niveaux—fédéral, provincial et municipal—de lancer des enquêtes immédiates sur l’usage abusif du pouvoir policier dans ce pays. Les chefs de la police d’Ottawa et de Niagara, les maires et les conseils de la police doivent mener une enquête approfondie sur cet abus révoltant et imposer des sanctions aux responsables.
Ensemble, nous devons veiller à ce que le Canada demeure un pays où la liberté d’expression est protégée, et où tous les individus, quelle que soit leur position ou leur origine, sont traités avec dignité et respect.
