End Canadian assistance to military suspected of committing genocide
Diplomats and lawyers hold press conference to respond to ICJ ruling that it suspects Israel is committing genocide
In response to the International Court of Justice finding that Israel may be committing genocide and delivering a provisional ruling that Israel must cease its genocidal policies in Gaza, the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute and Just Peace Advocates are calling on the Trudeau government to ensure Canada is not enabling a genocide by immediately suspending direct Canadian assistance to the Israeli military.
The two organizations have instigated a letter writing campaign demanding Trudeau:
- Suspend permits for arms sales to Israel.
- Pause bilateral military ties.
- Revoke the charitable status of charities violating Canada Revenue Agency rules by assisting the Israeli military.
- Announce it will investigate Canadians fighting in Gaza for committing war crimes.
- Clearly condemn Israel’s genocide.
At 12:30 today Just Peace Advocates and the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute will host an online press conference reacting to the World Court ruling. The participants include South Africa’s High Commissioner Rieaz Shaik, Palestine Authority representative Mona Abuamara, Director of Human Right Watch Canada Farida Deif, former Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories Michael Link and professor Avi Lewis.
The online press conference will begin at 12:30 EST on Friday, January 26.
Tens of thousands viewed the press conference hosted on January 26 by Just Peace Advocates and the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute with South Africa’s High Commissioner, the Palestinian Authority’s representative, the director of Human Right Watch Canada, Avi Lewis and Michael Lynk. ICJ suspects Israel is committing genocide: End Canadian Assistance to Military Committing Genocide
The International Court of Justice has ruled that it suspects Israel is violating the 1948 Genocide Convention. The ICJ has agreed that South Africa’s case can move forward and has provisionally ruled that Israel must curtail its genocidal policies in Gaza.
To ensure Canada is respecting its responsibilities under the Genocide Convention your government must immediately suspend direct assistance to the Israeli military.
