| As bombs rain down on Gaza and Palestinians resist through a general strike today, it is incumbent on us to reflect on the ways Canada has contributed to Palestinian dispossession. The Trudeau government has celebrated Canadians fighting in the Israeli military, created a special envoy to deflect criticism from Israel’s policies and has contributed to further criminalizing Palestinian political life. The Liberal’s Foreign Minister stated Canada would act as an “asset” for Israel if it gained a UN Security Council seat and Canada recently withdrew from a major UN conference on racism to placate Israel’s supporters. The Liberal government has allowed illegal military recruitment of Canadians for the IDF, condemned Palestine solidarity activists and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to stop consumers from knowing where wines are produced, obscuring land theft. The Liberals have voted against over 50 pro-Palestinian UN resolutions. Last but not least, registered Canadian charities donate more than a quarter billion dollars annually to Israel. | In a modern example of the ‘white man’s burden’, Canadian officials organized a meeting to discuss Haiti’s future in 2003. No Haitian officials were invited to the “Ottawa Initiative on Haiti” where top Canadian, French, OAS and US officials discussed the removal of the elected president and putting the country under UN trusteeship. After the coup, solidarity activists began calling for the release of all internal government documents concerning the conference and its connections to the “Core Group” which continues to heavily shape Haitian affairs. Recently Green MP Paul Manly sponsored a parliamentary petition calling for a release of all documents from the Ottawa Initiative on Haiti.
