Join the growing movement of individuals and organizations who have endorsed the Vote Kashmir campaign, which calls for a human rights based approach on Canada’s policies on self-determination for Kashmir. Our grassroots campaign will ensure that political parties and candidates hear our calls for justice for Kashmir.

What is the campaign?

It is important that parties and candidates in the upcoming scheduled Canadian election understand that:

1. Jammu and Kashmir is internationally-recognized disputed territory.
2. Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in contravention of international law, was annexed by the Govt of India In August of 2019.
3. The Indian Govt has actively imposed settler colonial polices of demographic change and ongoing collective punishment on the population of Kashmir.
4. The Govt. of India has violated international commitments as per the United Nations Security Council resolutions 47 (1948), 91(1951), 96(1951), 98(1952), 122(1957) and 126(1957) that call for a plebiscite to determine the future of the disputed territory;
5. Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states “the occupying power shall not transfer its own civilian population into territory it occupies;” and under Article 1 all High Contracting Parties, which includes Canada, are required to take action to ensure respect for the Convention “in all circumstances”; and
6. The overall situation has dangerously worsened as India continues to grant domicile rights to Indian citizens moving its own population into occupied Kashmir, confiscate land and resources, destroy the ecology and the environment, erase basic human rights of Kashmiris, and silence resistance through repressive means.

In the upcoming Canadian general election scheduled for April 2025, we commit to vote for candidates and parties that:

• Condemn the government of India’s settler colonial project in Kashmir and uphold the fundamental right of self determination
• Demand that India restores the fundamental rights of freedom of expression, and end systematic campaigns of arbitrary detention and collective punishment through raids and property expropriation
• With urgency, India frees all human rights activists, journalists, and political activists and dissenters;
• Insist upon compliance with international legal obligations as part of Canada’s ongoing relationship with India, especially in trade, defence, and counterterrorism; and
• Proactively work with the UN towards implementation of self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Quelle est la campagne ?

Il est important que les partis et les candidat.e.s aux prochaines élections canadiennes comprennent que :

1. Le Jammu-et-Cachemire est un territoire contesté reconnu internationalement.
2. Le Jammu-et-Cachemire occupé par l’Inde a été annexé par le gouvernement indien en août 2019, en violation du droit international.
3. Le gouvernement indien a activement imposé des politiques coloniales de peuplement, de changement démographique et de punition collective continue à la population du Cachemire.
4. Le gouvernement indien a violé ses engagements internationaux conformément aux résolutions 47 (1948), 91 (1951), 96 (1951), 98 (1952), 122 (1957) et 126 (1957) du Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies, qui appellent à un plébiscite pour déterminer l’avenir du territoire contesté.
5. L’article 49 de la Quatrième Convention de Genève stipule que « la puissance occupante ne transférera pas sa propre population civile dans le territoire qu’elle occupe » ; et, en vertu de l’article 1, toutes les Hautes Parties contractantes, dont le Canada, sont tenues de prendre des mesures pour assurer le respect de la Convention « en toutes circonstances » ; et
6. La situation générale s’est dangereusement aggravée; l’Inde continue d’accorder des droits de résidence à ses citoyen.ne.s en installant sa propre population au Cachemire occupé, continue de confisquer des terres et des ressources, de détruire l’écologie et l’environnement, de bafouer les droits fondamentaux des Cachemiris et de réduire au silence la résistance par des moyens répressifs.

Lors des prochaines élections générales canadiennes prévues en avril 2025, nous nous engageons à voter pour des candidat.e.s et des partis qui :

• Condamnent le projet colonial du gouvernement indien au Cachemire et défendent le droit fondamental à l’autodétermination.

• Exigent que l’Inde rétablisse le droit fondamental à la liberté d’expression et mette fin aux campagnes systématiques de détention arbitraire et de punition collective par le biais de perquisitions et d’expropriations de biens.
• Exige que l’Inde libère de toute urgence tous les militants des droits de la personne, les journalistes, les militants politiques et les dissidents.
• Insistent sur le respect des obligations juridiques internationales dans le cadre des relations continues du Canada avec l’Inde, notamment en matière de commerce, de défense et de lutte contre le terrorisme.
• Collaborent activement avec l’ONU à la mise en œuvre du droit à l’autodétermination du peuple du Jammu-et-Cachemire.
